Hello! my name is Kunāl Majumder

I am a journalist, academic, and advocate for press freedom and journalist safety, with a focus on press freedom, politics, democracy, and media capture. After leading the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)'s India program for over six years, I joined the University of Michigan as a Knight Wallace Fellow, where I explore the intersection of press freedom, economics, and public policy. I advise the Impulse Model Press Lab in Shillong, Meghalaya, and serve as an empanelled visiting faculty member for journalism at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. Since beginning my journalism career in 2006, I have worked with Tehelka, Indian Express, Rajasthan Patrika, VICE, and Zee Media. My work has earned me the UNFPA-Laadli Award for Gender Sensitivity, the Jan Mitra Award, and the Statesman Award for Rural Reporting. Additionally, I have been selected for the EU Visitors' Programme and the Foreign Correspondents' Programme. Beyond journalism, I am deeply interested in Tibetan Buddhism, both as a practitioner and an academic. You can reach me at mail[at]kunalmajumder[dot]com.
